Ephesians Chapter 4 – Unity in the Body

Dear Readers,

Time and again over the years, I felt the Lord calling me back to reflect on Ephesians Chapter 4. At first this puzzled me. Why keep bringing me back to the same passages? But the more I studied these verses, the more it became apparent how very much our Lord longs for and desires unity in the Church and indeed in all the world. This reflection from Colossians reveals the crucial importance of unity to the Church and to the world:

Colossians 1: 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Child, this is a great truth, one that the world has great difficulty grasping. Indeed there are many, even within the church, that doubt the primacy of Christ. But, if not Christ, then who? He alone is worthy to break open the seals; he alone embodies the perfect unity of the Trinity. It is this unity that sustains all things. This unity is the remedy to a dis-ordered world. There must be no wrangling or jealousy among my followers. This is a sin against the unity of the Godhead. Until there is unity in the church, there can never be peace on earth. Pray my child, pray for this unity, work for unity, build a peaceful kingdom.”

It seems we cannot over-estimate the importance of unity to the plan of God for humanity. May our Lord grant that in reflecting on Ephesians 4 we may be encouraged and strengthened to tirelessly sow the seeds of unity based on the truth of Jesus Christ, for the glory of God, and for the cause of peace in the Church and in the world.

Ephesians 4 Unity in the Body

Child this is my ultimate desire for my body on earth. Let all my children be of one mind and heart-Christ’s. For he alone is the head of the body, the church. ‘What would Jesus do?’ You can be assured that Jesus would always act in perfect love and sacrifice, for the ultimate good of all. Do you see how this goes against all the world teaches? For the world would have you believe that what is good for the individual is good for all, and that no one need sacrifice anything. But the truth is you must die to self in order to live. You achieve your truest potential when self is set aside. Are you now beginning to understand? For unless the self moves out of the way, the Spirit cannot enter. Die, child, die to self, for I long for us to live-eternally.”

Holy Trinity, Gloriana*, grant me this grace, in your mercy. For I am weak. Only in you am I strong. Father, Son and Spirit, bless me, for I long to be one with the Gloriana! Amen.

Ephesians 4: 1 I, then, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.

Beloved, do not take lightly the call to penance you have received. Let fasting and prayer permeate your life. Put to death your own desires and do not assert your will, but in all things submit humbly to those I have placed above you, if it does not lead to sin. In this way, you submit to God. My child, I mean to use your prayers and sacrifices to hasten the coming of the kingdom. Think about his when your desires tempt you. Offer to me your desire and your temptation. Then I will use it for the good of all.”

Lord, you always choose the weakest souls in which to display your strength. You alone know the extent of my weakness, but if you have called me to this way of penance, then I know that your grace is sufficient for me. Jesus, I adore you.

Ephesians 4: 1 I, then, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.

Beloved, do not be too eager to embrace what the world has to offer. You have been given much more, been called much higher than that. Be always ready to go higher, to do more, to let go of the anchors that weigh you down. Your call is sure, your treasure guaranteed. No one who looks back is fit for the kingdom. My promise stands firm. You must also stand firm in the promise. In this way you will be a sign to others of the great heights to which your God has called each one. Believe, my child, and be free.”

Jesus, help me to stand firm in the promise. I believe, hope and trust in you, and ask pardon for all those who do not believe, hope and trust in you. Lord have mercy on us all. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 2 (I urge you to live) with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love.

“Do you see, my child, how love is the answer to every problem? It is not always the easy answer, but it is always right. Patience, gentleness, humility, these are the gifts you give to those you love. The self must disappear and the eternal heart appear. Ponder what it means to love during this holy season (of Lent). Then, put it into practice for the sake of those I place on your path.”

Lord, I am poor and prone to selfishness. Grant me your heart to love with and your eyes to see with, for the sake of souls. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 3 (Strive) to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace.

Beloved, I have told you before that it is better to be kind than it is to be ‘right’. There is a righteousness that divides and seeks to conquer. There is no peace in this approach, only division. Therefore, look carefully at the attitudes you hold, especially the ones that hold you. Do not be a slave to them, but always act out of love for those I send you. Let your own thoughts and feelings take a back seat. Then you will be working for peace, not division. The truth will be victorious if love is given free reign.”

Lord, grant me the grace of discernment, to know when to speak and when to keep silent, that love and peace may grow in me and around me. I ask these things through the love of Jesus and Mary . Amen.

Ephesians 4:3 (Strive) to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace.

“My beloved child, so much needs to be done to preserve unity. Where hearts are not at peace there can be no unity. Where hearts are not at prayer there can be no peace, for one flows out of the other. Peace has its source in the heart of God, which is perfect unity. Since prayer is communion with God, the more one prays, the more the fruits of peace and unity will flow. Ponder these things, my child.”

Lord, may the call to prayer I have received produce abundant fruit in peace and unity. In your mercy, do not look on my poor efforts at prayer, but see my prayers magnified through Jesus in Mary. May their perfection elevate my prayers so that all you desire may be accomplished. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 4-6 (Strive to be) one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Beloved, do you see that unity is what you must aspire to at all times. This has never been easy for my children, for the shadow of the evil one is never far away. He loves to sow confusion and chaos, misunderstanding and the pride of self-righteousness. But you are children of light! Do not give in to the shadows. Light always dispels shadows. Stay firmly rooted in the truth of your faith. And in all things-charity!”

Lord, help me always to work for unity, shunning the shadows that lurk in wait. Jesus, Prince of Light, I am yours!

Ephesians 4: 11-13 And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God.

Beloved child hear me. Do you now see how, just as you have been equipped for the work of ministry, so too you must now use your gifts to equip others for the work to which they have been called. I have given you the message and the medium, the gifts and the courage. You need only surrender your life and your will in order that the will of the Lord may be accomplished in you. Beloved child follow me and I will make you a fisher of fishermen.”

Thy will alone be done, beloved Father of my heart.

Ephesians 4: 11-12 And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.

Beloved, I have not left my church orphaned, but in every generation I call those I have predestined to build up the church. Each generation I call many laborers to the harvest, but each generation, there are few who respond to my call. This is a great poverty for the church. Child, do your part. Try to discern always the direction in which you are called. This will give us both more joy than you have imagined. Child, be at peace.”

Here I am, Lord, I come to do your will. Beloved, in your mercy help me to discern what that may be. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 13 …until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ.

“Child, do you see what I have been waiting for? What constitutes the coming of the kingdom? Has it ever seemed more far away than it does in this generation? Yet, my child, this is the hope to which you are called. Believe that it will happen. My Body on earth will attain to the full stature of Christ and what glory you will see then! But before that day, much will happen. It is up to you to pray, to trust and to hope in the coming of the kingdom.”

My Lord and my God, I believe, hope and trust in you. May your kingdom come and your will be done. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 13 …until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God.

“My child, this is my desire–that all my children would be united in Jesus, one with him, one with the other and through Jesus, one with God, perfect Trinity, perfect unity. This is heaven. But my child, what do you see? Wars, adversity, greed, idolatry, everything that heaven is not. Why cling to this? Run to God. Run. Do not delay, for the time is short, indeed it is at hand. Pray, pray and pray, my child. It has never been more urgent.”

Lord have mercy! In your mercy grant conversion and the gift of faith to all hearts, but especially those farthest from you. Let light and truth prevail. O Jesus, come in glory, that we may be one!

Ephesians 4: 14 That we may no longer be infants, tossed by waves and swept along by every wind of teaching arising from human trickery, from their cunning in the interests of deceitful scheming.

Beloved, many are the schemers and liars in this age. But of these you need have no fear. For the Holy Spirit of Truth, who lives in you, will always reveal to you the true colors of the one before you. Trust the inner voice that speaks to you. Repent, confess, and receive the Eucharist. Then with confidence surrender your will and your judgment to the Breath of Love at work in you, and be at peace.”

Lord, Holy Spirit, I thank you for your work in me. I praise your wisdom and perfect guidance. Help me, sweet Advocate, to always listen for your gentle voice, and give me the courage to follow your promptings. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 14 That we may no longer be infants, tossed by waves and swept along by every wind of teaching arising from human trickery, from their cunning in the interests of deceitful scheming.

Beloved child, there are many who would deceive you, who would seek the ruin of your soul. Enter into the Breath of Love that you might reside in the truth. In this way you will be protected from the cunning of the enemy who seeks to destroy you.”

Lord, help me. Breath of Love, lead me to all truth and never let me be parted from you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 15 Rather, living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ.

Beloved child of hope, place all your trust in me, for I am your hope. By believing in me, in my infinite goodness and power, you attain to the truth. By living in hope which comes from this faith, you become a sign of the living God to all those around you. For no one can see your hope and not be moved. It lives and breathes and has its origin in Christ your Lord and Saviour. Therefore the more you hope, the closer you move to becoming one with your Lord. Live, move, and breathe hope. Be at peace my child.”

Lord grant me the grace I need to more fully conform to your plan for me, that I might imitate you by my hope, in all things. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 15 Rather, living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ.

Father, how can I better live the truth in love?

Beloved child it is the Spirit who has led you to this passage. My beloved, in truth there is no falsehood, only sincerity, integrity and wholeness, leading to peace. Know Jesus and you know truth. Enter into the life of Jesus and you begin to live the truth. Love will follow as naturally as breathing, for one cannot enter into the life of Jesus without living in truth and love. Know Jesus, child. Know him with your heart and your head, with every singing molecule and atom of your being. This is truth.”

Jesus I long to know you in every way possible. Reveal yourself to me in every moment of my life, that I might begin to live in truth and love to the glory of your name. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 15 Rather, living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ.

Beloved, to live the truth in love does not mean that you should use the truth as a battering ram, but rather as a light to guide and to lead, a ‘welcome home’ fire that draws rather than pulls. The truth is not always comfortable for those who hear it. That is why you must live the truth in love, for love always attracts. To live the truth without love can repel those you are trying to teach. Love is the key. That is how you grow in every way into Christ, purely, simply-love.”

Lord if you help me I will be able to do this and all things with great love, for you are love. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 16 (Christ) from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, with the proper functioning of each part, brings about the body’s growth and builds itself up in love.

Do you see, my child, how the object of the body of Christ should always be to grow in love, for that is how it will best grow into Christ. I have provided each part and given each part its own dignity and function. Then let the whole body affirm and strengthen its individual parts so that what God has planned for his church will be fulfilled through the humble workings of its members. Child, pray for the church.”

Lord, I ask for every gift and grace for your church and for its individual members. Let each of us treat the others with love and respect for each one’s dignity as a child of the loving Father. Jesus, heal your body, for we are weak and broken. Lord have mercy.

Ephesians 4: 17-18 So I declare and testify in the Lord that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds; darkened in understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance, because of their hardness of heart.

Beloved, of the two, hardness of heart is the greater sin, the larger tragedy. If someone is lost through ignorance, that is bad enough, but one who is lost through hardness of heart, that is very tragic. Yet remedies exist for both. Always there is hope. Prayer first. Prayer softens even the hardest heart, so never stop praying for those I place on your heart. Second: knowledge. Let your life witness to the beauty of relationship with the One True God. Speak gently and joyfully of your knowledge and experience of the Lord. Many hearts will be won this way, for all have a built-in desire to know me. Pray first. Prepare the soil. Then plant the seed. You will be amazed at the fruit.”

Lord, help me in this, that I might lead others to you in love and humility. Prepare the hearts you have chosen that they might receive the seed in fertile soil. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Ephesians 4:19 They have become callous and have handed themselves over to licentiousness for the practice of every kind of impurity to excess.

“My beloved, do you see how the spirit of this age seduces many? Is your God to remain silent while the wicked exploit and abuse the innocent? My child, this generation brings destruction on its own head. The seeds of sin reap the harvest of death and destruction. There is not much time left, but there is always time for fasting and prayer. This alone can temper what is to come. Do not hesitate, but enter into the mercy of God and be the one to spread it wherever you are able.”

My Lord and my God, I give you praise and thanks for your great mercy. It is your mercy that gives me hope and confidence. do not let sin destroy those you have created in your image, but save us all from eternal flame and from the destruction that sinners are bringing to all creation. Lord have mercy! Amen.

Ephesians 4: 22-24 You should put away the old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created in God’s way in righteousness and holiness of truth.

Beloved child of my heart, I have made of you a new creation. Therefore do not cling to what has gone before, but step out in newness of life through Jesus your Beloved.”

Jesus, Beloved, I am weak, but your strength is made perfect in weakness. Heal that within me which clings to the old way and bring forth within me a desire for the newness of life in you. Beloved Jesus I ask all these things in your name, who reigns with the Father and the Spirit now and forever.

Beloved child, I am much wounded by the sin of apathy. Call forth those whom I have chosen beforehand. Pray that my blood will run hot in their veins, that the fire of my love might be spread in all the earth.”

Jesus may it be done as you have said.

Ephesians 4: 22-24 You should put away the old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created in God’s way in righteousness and holiness of truth.

Beloved child, hear me. You are a new creation. Do not look back with longing at your former self. No one who looks back is fit for the kingdom.”

Father I repent! I have turned my back on grace, O Lord! Have mercy on me through Jesus your Son, who has washed me clean in his blood. Father I accept with gratitude the grace you offer. Keep me faithful, for without you I cannot please you. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 22-24 You should put away the old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created in God’s way in righteousness and holiness of truth.

Beloved child, you are a new creation. Guard against clinging to the old way of life. There is much to discover in the freshness of this new life you have been given. Break free of the old ways. Leap into your new life with joy and hope. Leave anxiety and fear behind, for you are called to righteousness and holiness of truth.”

Amen, my Lord! Help me to abandon myself to your gift of new life, with joy and trust. You are Lord, God Most High! Amen. Alleluia!

Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

“My beloved, I am the truth. If you speak the truth, you speak of me. If you speak what is false, you deny me, saying, ‘I do not know the man!’ My child, learn to curb your tongue, to speak what is true and what will build up the kingdom. This is an act of unity, for where the truth is spoken, there I AM. And where I AM, no division is possible.”

Lord, have mercy. Perfect Unity, descend upon me and give me what I need to accomplish all you desire in love and truth. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 25 Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

Do you see, little child, how lacking in reason it is to lie to others? For we are members of one another, so to lie to another is to lie to oneself. Truth, spoken in love, humility and gentleness-this can save. It can open the heart to the truth of Jesus Christ. Remember child, let love, humility and gentleness serve the truth. For without these, the truth can be too sharp for delicate hearts. Enthrone the truth on these virtues, however, and it becomes a glowing light to guide even the most world-weary traveler. Shalom, my child.”

Lord, help me always to practice these virtues so that whatever I say might light the path to Christ. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 25 Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

Little child, this is a great truth. There is not one of you who stands alone, but each of you, by virtue of your membership in the Body, is connected-in communion-with each other. This is especially true within the church, but also applies to the human family as a whole, since all have their origin in me. Therefore, when one sins, not only does he sin against God and other, but also against self, for other is part of self. This connection has its origins in the creator. Unhappy is the one who puts self above God and other. He spits upon his own joy. Beloved child, pray for unity in the great and wondrous family of God.”

Lord, grant all your children the grace to live for God and other, putting self last. Lord, open hearts to your gracious love. Blessed Mother, pray for us. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 29 No foul language should come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for needed edification, that it may impart grace to those who hear.

Child, in word and deed, may you always be an instrument of grace. Beloved, use your words to build up the kingdom, not to tear down. Choose your words in speech as carefully as you do when writing. Do not speak hastily, especially when your emotions run high. It is then that you risk tearing down others. Take special care, my child. Hold every thought captive to Christ and speak only what he allows. In this way alone are you able to please me.”

Lord, set a guard on my tongue, which can be sharp. Help me to be loving and kind in all my words and deeds, for the sake of the kingdom. Amen.

Ephesians 4: 29-32 No foul language should come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for needed edification, that it may impart grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed for the day of redemption. All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. (And) be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.

Beloved child, you have been sealed with the Holy Spirit for the day of redemption. This has been God’s free gift to you; you have not earned it. However, in humble gratitude it follows that you must be as generous and forgiving to others as God has been to you. It is the worst form of ingratitude to hold others accountable to you when God has bestowed upon you all the treasure of heaven. Root out the bitterness from your heart. No earthly slight can ever take away what you have been freely given by your loving Father. Be a child of gratitude, hope and joy, forgiving all in Jesus’ name.”

Lord of all hope, may it be done to me and in me as you have said. Make me an instrument of your Divine Mercy, through Jesus the Lord and in his name. Amen.

  1. We cannot comprehend or even imagine the depths of his mercy, only accept it and become conduits of his mercy to others. Thank you for your comment, Andrea. Peace be with you.

    1. Thank you for your question Roxanne. The words were given to me by the Holy Spirit, so they are in a “tongues” language. (See Corinthians 1:4-11 for St. Paul’s teaching on the gifts of the Spirit.) Tongues is a personal prayer language, only to be used publicly when there is an interpreter or interpretation. That is why I have used these words here and included their meaning as revealed to me. There is an excellent article by Bob Van Cleef on the gifts of the Holy Spirit here.

      God bless you dear sister.

  2. Pelianito,

Thank you for this….how it speaks to me as well, and really speaks of the writings of Luisa Piccarreta-about the Gift of Living in the Divine Will, and of unity within the Church. I thank you for your ministry and your faithfulness to God, and to us. May He continue to Bless you in all you do.
